Job Description
The Life Insurance Medical Consultant provides expert support to our underwriting team by conducting case referral reviews, assessing medical, interpreting medical data, and guiding complex underwriting decisions.
This role also supports policy rescission and contestable claims review and delivers periodic training to staff.
The ideal candidate has a clinical background and/or life insurance underwriting experience, with strong analytical and communication skills, excels in providing customer-focused solutions, and demonstrates agility, organization, and relationship-building.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Accurately assess medical to protect the organization's mortality results while supporting sales objectives.

• Conduct case reviews (~85%) based on underwriter referrals, including mortality risk assessment, medical data interpretation, and guidance on underwriting decisions.

• Review policy rescission and contestable claims (~10%) to support claims adjudication and risk management.

• Deliver periodic training (~5%) to underwriters and staff, sharing expertise and best practices.

• Manage a daily volume of 5–10+ referrals, primarily via email or system referrals, with occasional phone follow-up.

• Build and maintain strong relationships with underwriters and leadership to support collaborative decision-making and business growth.

• Demonstrate excellent communication skills and accountability for accurate and prompt processing.

• Display agility to manage multiple tasks and adapt in a changing work environment.

• Work accurately while maintaining speed and flexibility in both team and independent production environments.

• Effectively manage change, defuse conflict, and negotiate positive results.

• Take a cross-functional view of work processes and understand the ramifications to other areas of actions taken and decisions made.

• Establish priorities and meet deadlines with a high degree of organization.

• Collaborate with underwriting and claims teams to ensure consistent, high-quality decision-making.

Qualifications:

• Clinical background (MD, DO, RN, APRN, or equivalent); active, semi-retired, or academic practitioners welcome.

• 5+ years of life insurance underwriting experience preferred.

• Experience and familiarity with mortality risk assessment and edge cases.

• Demonstrated experience providing customer-focused solutions or support.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with demonstrated written and spoken communication abilities.

• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and adapt to change.

• Proven ability to effectively manage change, defuse conflict, and negotiate positive outcomes.

• Ability to take a cross-functional view of work processes and understand the impact of decisions on other areas.

• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with underwriters and leadership.

• Ability to interpret complex medical data and provide clear, actionable recommendations.

• Proficient in computer skills and using various software packages.

• Ability to work accurately while maintaining speed and flexibility in a team and independent production environment.

• A high degree of organization and the ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
